Foods: Acid Reflux Cause?

While overeating or consuming spicy foods may increase a person's risk for heartburn, the two are not an acid reflux cause.

Acid reflux is caused by a relaxing esophagus. The esophagus connects the throat to the stomach. In acid reflux sufferers, the end of the esophagus closest to the stomach has a tendency to relax, allowing more stomach acid to back up into the esophagus. Acid reflux causes the lining of the esophagus to be eroded and may cause long term damage if not properly diagnosed and treated.

Remember, foods are not an acid reflux cause, but if you have been diagnosed with acid reflux and if spicy or greasy foods aggravate your symptoms of heartburn or stomach pain, consider eliminating them from your diet - or at least not consuming them often.

While bending over or lying down may worsen one's symptoms, they are not an acid reflux cause. When a person with acid reflux bends over or lies down, it often pushes stomach acid farther up the esophagus.

Smoking is not an acid reflux cause and generally doesn't affect sufferers of the disease. Some people link the two because smoking can cause hoarseness and so can the eroding of the throat lining that is an acid reflux cause. While the two are not linked, stopping smoking is a good idea for other health benefits anyway.

Asthma is not an acid reflux cause. Some researchers believe there may be a link between the two, though, and that asthma may actually be caused in some cases by acid reflux. The idea is that regurgitated acid enters the lungs of some acid reflux suffers. People with asthma who believe they may also be suffering from acid reflux should talk with their doctor to determine if acid reflux treatment could be beneficial to them.

If you have any questions about an acid reflux cause, talk with your doctor. He or she will be able to tell you things that might trigger increased acid reflux symptoms and help you find methods to avoid those things. And remember, while acid reflux cannot be cured by medication, it can be treated.
