Infants, Children and Adults Can Exhibit Acid Reflux Symptoms

Acid reflux symptoms are wide and vary from person to person.

Frequent heartburn is the most common of acid reflux symptoms. Most people experience heartburn from time to time, but heartburn that occurs more than twice a week that doesn't improve with changes to your diet should be evaluated by a doctor.

Having a bad sour or bitter taste in your mouth is another one of the acid reflux symptoms. Stomach acid is sour and when regurgitated, you will be able to taste it. Some people have difficulty or find it painful to swallow, which is another acid reflux symptom.

The scariest of acid reflux symptoms is probably chest pain. Acid reflux chest pains can closely mimic the pain associated with heart attack. Even if you have been diagnosed with acid reflux disease, chest pain might be associated with heart attack or another condition instead of your reflux. Never take for granted that your chest pain is related to your acid reflux, especially if your family has a history of heart attacks. Have any chest pain evaluated by a professional. Your doctor can help you distinguish the difference between the two chest pains.

Other acid reflux symptoms include hoarseness, wheezing and coughing, and sore throat, all caused by the stomach acid damaging either the esophagus, vocal chords, throat or lungs. If acid is regurgitated into the mouth, it can also erode tooth enamel and cause chronic bad breath.

Acid reflux symptoms in children and babies are the same as in adults, but in the case of babies, parents have to be observant since they cannot speak for themselves. Babies with acid reflux symptoms tend to spit up or vomit often, may have colic-like symptoms, and even frequent ear and/or sinus infections. The ear and sinus infections can result when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus as far as the back of the throat. There, the acid irritates the throat, nose or ears.

If you or your child experience acid reflux symptoms, see your family doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment options. Your doctor may prescribe daily medication or may simply ask you to alter your diet for a while to see if your acid reflux symptoms improve without medication. Surgical procedures are available in serious cases of acid reflux disease.
